Everything gets a sequel nowadays. Call it the death of originality, call it nostalgia-dosing, call it what you like, but it’s a trend that has gripped hip hop as much as movies in recent years, with Lupe Fiasco’s ‘Food & Liquor’, Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Eternal Atake’, Nicki Minaj’s ‘Pink Friday’ and Eminem’s ‘Marshall Mathers LP’ gaining follow ups years later.
It’s been 15 years since Wiz Khalifa released ‘Kush + Orange Juice’, a mixtape that defined his stoner-rap brand and gave him the springboard toward the many successes that followed. Now, after a long spell of diminishing returns, he’s recaptured that old magic with one of 2025’s nicest surprises so far.
Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, fans of the original will immediately recognise the vibes here.
There’s a smooth confidence that oozes through the speakers, never feeling forced or overdone, with pockets of tempered braggadocio highlighting his wins without being wholly obnoxious.
Yes, Wiz raps about his luxurious lifestyle and the women that live it with him, but he’s more thankful than flashy, although Cashed Out’s refrain of “cashed out, new titties, new butt” does threaten to derail the calm.
What’s Hannin and Crime Bud and Women are easy to kick back to as Wiz delivers with no fuss, while the bouncing 808s and R&B-inspired beats of How We Act and 5 Star give the tape a sense of timelessness. It’s also littered with high profile features, including Don Tolliver, Ty Dollar $ign and Juicy J, who all elevate their respective songs without taking over.
There’s a noticeable sag towards the end, with Got It All and Just To See You Smile almost wholly unmemorable, but it’s buoyed by the laser-focused My Influence and the joyous reggae edge of Red Eye. ‘Kush + Orange Juice 2’ is confirmation that Wiz Khalifa is back on the right track and sets up his next project (which he describes on this tape as his best yet, obviously) as something worth paying attention to.
